starcastic

Today is Dan's silver birthday! I just finished filling the apartment with balloons and presents and tonight we're going out to dinner. The place is still a secret!

I'll like to share a little anecdote about Dan for the occasion.
Sarcasm is very hard to identify in e-mails and blogs. For others, it's even harder to tell in eveyday life. Danny moved back to the states, to Virginia, in the third grade after living in Germany with his family on a military base for quite a few years. Little Danny had never heard anyone be sarcastic until a new kid who had just moved to Virginia from New York started saying what Danny thought were some very rude things. One day when he confronted this kid on the playground, this kid told him he was being sarcastic. For years Danny thought the word was "starcastic."
Dan still has trouble pointing out sarcasm in daily life which is why when he found out I was from New York, he was a bit wary. It's so cute sometimes how he gets flustered when I'm being sarcastic. Recently I told him that I would take him somewhere nice for his birthday, like Pizza Hut or Chuckie Cheese. He got such a dejected look on his face and asked if we couldn't as least go to Mama Santa's, a pizza place in Little Italy here. It's cute, but what's even cuter is when he himself tries to be sarcastic.

I hope I've sufficiently embarrassed him. Good thing he doesn't read this blog!
